The FNAC Scan typically refers to the Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) scan. FNAC is a diagnostic procedure used to investigate lumps or masses in the body. The term FNSC is sometimes used interchangeably with FNAC, especially in the context of cytology and histopathology.

Overview of FNSC (FNAC) Scan:

Purpose: The FNSC scan is primarily used to diagnose the nature of a lump, whether it’s benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). It’s commonly employed for investigating lumps in the breast, thyroid, lymph nodes, and salivary glands.

Procedure: A thin, hollow needle is inserted into the lump or suspicious area to extract cells or fluid. These samples are then examined under a microscope by a pathologist to determine the presence of any abnormalities.

Advantages:

• Minimally invasive

• Quick and relatively painless

• Can often be performed in an outpatient setting

• Provides rapid results

Applications:

• Diagnosing cysts, abscesses, or tumors

• Evaluating swollen lymph nodes

• Assessing thyroid nodules

• Investigating lumps in the breast

Risks: The procedure is generally safe, but there can be minor risks such as bleeding, infection, or discomfort at the site of the needle insertion.

When is it Used?

The FNSC scan is often used when a lump is detected during a physical examination, or when imaging tests (like ultrasound or mammography) reveal an area that needs further investigation.
