What Is Retrograde Urethrogram (RGU) and Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCU)?

Retrograde Urethrogram (RGU) and Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCU) are specialized X-ray imaging tests used to examine the urethra and bladder. These diagnostic procedures help identify abnormalities such as strictures, blockages, or tumors affecting the lower urinary tract.

Why Are RGU and MCU Tests Ordered?

Doctors recommend RGU and MCU tests to evaluate symptoms related to urinary problems, including difficulty in urination, recurrent urinary tract infections, or suspected urethral injury. These tests provide detailed visualization of the urethra and bladder, assisting in diagnosing conditions like urethral strictures, bladder outlet obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, and other structural abnormalities.

Preparation and Fasting Requirements

For accurate results, patients are advised to fast for at least 6 hours before undergoing the RGU and MCU tests. Fasting helps reduce the risk of complications and ensures clear imaging during the procedure.

Procedure Overview

  1. Retrograde Urethrogram (RGU): A contrast dye is gently introduced into the urethra through a catheter. X-ray images are then taken to visualize the urethral passage and detect any narrowing or obstruction.
  2. Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCU): After filling the bladder with contrast dye via a catheter, X-rays are taken while the patient urinates. This dynamic imaging helps assess bladder function and urethral anatomy during voiding.

The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes and is performed under the supervision of a radiologist or trained technician.

Understanding the Results

The RGU and MCU tests produce detailed X-ray images that highlight the structure and function of the urethra and bladder. These images help detect strictures, blockages, diverticula, tumors, or vesicoureteral reflux. Results are usually available within 1 hour after the test.

Note: Interpretation of these results should always be done by a qualified clinician who can correlate findings with clinical symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.

Cost, Duration, and Report Time

  • Cost: Rs. 4000/-
  • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Report Turnaround Time: 1 hour
  • Fasting: Required for 6 hours before the test

These tests are safe, minimally invasive, and valuable tools for diagnosing urinary tract disorders. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and follow-up.
